A Tale of Two Cities Book 3 Chapters 1 to 4 Quiz

A Tale of Two Cities Book 3 Chapters 1 to 4 Quiz : In Book 3, Chapter 1, Charles Darnay travels to Paris during the dangerous time of the French Revolution. Everywhere he goes, he faces suspicion because he belongs to the aristocratic class. The revolutionaries stop him repeatedly, but he is allowed to continue only because of Gabelleโ€™s letter. He soon learns about a strict law which orders that all emigrants must be punished and their property seized. When Darnay finally reaches Paris, he is arrested and secretly imprisoned in La Force prison. Monsieur Defarge takes him there but refuses to inform Mr. Lorry about his arrest. Inside the prison, Darnay feels completely cut off from the world. The prisoners appear like lifeless ghosts, and he feels as if he is already dead, reminding readers of Doctor Manetteโ€™s earlier suffering.

In Book 3, Chapter 2, the scene shifts to Mr. Lorry in Paris. He is deeply worried about the growing violence outside. Suddenly, Lucie and Doctor Manette arrive with the shocking news that Darnay has been imprisoned. Outside, a violent mob gathers and begins sharpening weapons, creating a frightening atmosphere. Mr. Lorry feels helpless, but Doctor Manette remains calm. Because of his past imprisonment in the Bastille, he holds respect among the revolutionaries. He decides to go into the dangerous crowd to try to save Darnay. His courage and past suffering now become his strength.

In Book 3, Chapter 3, Mr. Lorry arranges a safer place for Lucie and her child, as keeping them at the bank could be risky. He leaves Jerry Cruncher to protect them. After a long wait, Defarge arrives with a message from Doctor Manette saying that Darnay is safe for now. He also brings a letter from Darnay to Lucie. However, Madame Defarge and another woman called The Vengeance accompany him. They come to observe Lucie and her daughter. Lucie politely requests Madame Defarge to show kindness, but she remains cold and emotionless. This chapter clearly shows the contrast between Lucieโ€™s love and Madame Defargeโ€™s revengeful nature.

In Book 3, Chapter 4, Doctor Manette returns after four days. He explains that although he could not free Darnay, he has secured his temporary safety. The behaviour of the mob is shown as unpredictableโ€”sometimes violent and sometimes joyful. Doctor Manette gains respect and becomes an important figure in Paris due to his past suffering. However, Darnay remains in prison for one year and three months. This period marks the beginning of the Reign of Terror, a time of extreme violence. Dickens highlights the conflict between love and revenge, showing how humanity is being replaced by cruelty during the Revolution.
