David Copperfield Chapters 13 to 16 Quiz : In these chapters, David’s life takes a turning point from suffering to hope and stability. After escaping from the harsh life under the Murdstones, David decides to go to Dover to seek help from his aunt, Miss Betsey Trotwood. His journey is long and difficult. He walks for several days, sells his waistcoat to survive, and even sleeps in a haystack. By the time he reaches Dover, he looks weak, tired, and poorly dressed.
At first, Miss Trotwood refuses to accept him and tells him to go away. However, when David tells her his story and speaks about his unhappy childhood after his mother’s death, her attitude changes. Though she appears strict and sharp in her speech, she shows kindness and takes him in. She arranges food, rest, and proper care for him. This shows that behind her rough behaviour, she has a caring heart.
David also meets Mr. Dick, a simple and friendly man living with Miss Trotwood. Though he behaves strangely, he is kind and harmless. David feels safe and happy in this new home. Soon, Miss Trotwood writes to Mr. Murdstone to discuss David’s future. When the Murdstones arrive, they speak harshly about David, calling him disobedient. But Miss Trotwood strongly defends David and criticises them for their cruelty and neglect. Finally, she decides that David will not return to them. She accepts him as her responsibility and even gives him a new name, “Trotwood Copperfield,” marking the beginning of a new life.
Later, Miss Trotwood plans for David’s education in Canterbury. There, he stays with Mr. Wickfield, a kind lawyer, and meets his gentle daughter Agnes, who becomes an important emotional support in his life. David also encounters Uriah Heep, a strange and unpleasant boy whose behaviour creates discomfort.
At school, David studies under Doctor Strong, who runs a disciplined and respectful institution, very different from his earlier school. Though David feels nervous at first, he slowly adjusts. He enjoys Agnes’s company and begins to feel peace and happiness again. However, he notices certain concerns around him. Mr. Wickfield has a habit of drinking too much wine, showing a weakness in his character.
During a small gathering, David observes tension involving Annie Strong and her cousin Jack Maldon. Annie appears uneasy, and a mysterious incident involving a missing ribbon suggests hidden emotions and secrets.
