David Copperfield Chapters 9 to 12 Quiz : In Chapters 9 to 12 of David Copperfield, the life of young David changes completely as he faces deep sorrow, loneliness, and hardship.
Chapter 9 begins on David’s birthday, but instead of joy, he receives shocking news—his mother has died. This news breaks his heart. He returns home and finds the house silent and cold. The Murdstones behave without any emotion, and David feels completely neglected. He is also told that his baby brother has died. Before the funeral, David is taken to see his mother’s dead body, which fills him with grief and confusion. After the funeral, Peggotty is asked to leave, and David is almost ignored in the house.
Soon, Peggotty takes David with her to Yarmouth. There, he feels some warmth and happiness again. The Peggotty family welcomes him lovingly. Little Em’ly has grown into a beautiful girl, and David becomes very fond of her. He even dreams of marrying her in the future. Peggotty decides to marry Mr. Barkis, and David happily agrees. During a small outing, Peggotty and Barkis get married quietly. These moments bring a temporary sense of comfort to David’s troubled life.
However, when David returns to the Murdstones, his condition becomes worse. He is left alone most of the time, spending his days reading or dreaming. The Murdstones show no care for his education or well-being. Finally, Mr. Murdstone decides to send David to work in London, believing that he should face the harsh realities of life early.
In Chapter 11, David starts working at Murdstone and Grinby’s warehouse. The place is dirty, full of rats, and unpleasant. His job is to wash bottles and paste labels, which he finds humiliating. He feels ashamed because he is educated but forced to work like a poor child labourer.
David lives with Mr. Micawber and his family. The Micawbers are kind but always in financial trouble. Mr. Micawber believes that “something will turn up,” even when creditors trouble him. Soon, he is sent to debtors’ prison, and his family joins him there. Strangely, they live more comfortably in prison than outside.
David continues to live alone in a small room and feels very lonely. His work life remains difficult and degrading. When the Micawbers decide to move away after Mr. Micawber’s release, David feels completely helpless.
In Chapter 12, David decides to run away and seek help from his aunt, Miss Betsey Trotwood. He borrows money from Peggotty and starts his journey. But on the way, he is cheated by a stranger who steals his money and belongings. Now, David is alone in London, with no money, no support, and no clear future.
