David Copperfield Chapters 29 to 32 Quiz : David visits the house of James Steerforth and receives a warm welcome, but Rosa Dartle behaves strangely. She questions David about Steerforth and indirectly blames him for keeping Steerforth away from home. Rosa clearly has deep feelings for Steerforth, though her love is mixed with jealousy and anger. When Steerforth jokingly says that they should love each other more in future, Rosa suddenly strikes him and leaves the room in rage. David is surprised, but Steerforth treats the matter lightly and calls her dangerous.
Before sleeping, Steerforth tells David that if they are ever separated, David should remember him at his best. This scene later becomes very touching because it hints at the coming tragedy. The next morning David leaves for Yarmouth, not knowing that his friendship with Steerforth will soon be destroyed forever.
At Yarmouth, David learns that Mr. Barkis is near death. The atmosphere in the Peggotty family is full of sadness. Emโly appears nervous and disturbed, and David notices that she avoids Ham and clings instead to Mr. Peggotty. Soon Barkis dies peacefully after saying his famous words, โBarkis is willinโ.โ His death is simple yet emotional.
After Barkisโs funeral, David reads his will and discovers that Barkis had secretly saved a large amount of money. Peggotty and others receive support through the will. But the peace of the family suddenly breaks when Ham reveals that Emโly has run away with her lover. David is shocked when he learns that the man is Steerforth.
This event completely destroys the happiness of the Peggotty family. Mr. Peggotty, though heartbroken, does not curse Emโly. Instead, he decides to search for her and bring her back with love and forgiveness. His kindness and humanity make him one of the noblest characters in the novel. Mrs. Gummidge, who earlier used to complain constantly, also becomes practical and supportive during this crisis.
David suffers greatly because he still remembers Steerforth as a charming and generous friend, even after his betrayal. Miss Mowcher later arrives and admits that she unknowingly helped Steerforth and Emโly communicate through Littimer. She now feels guilty and angry.
David, Mr. Peggotty, and Peggotty travel to London and meet Mrs. Steerforth. Her behaviour is cold and proud. She refuses to accept the possibility of Steerforth marrying Emโly because of class difference. Unlike the warm-hearted Peggotty family, the Steerforth household shows pride and lack of sympathy.
