David Copperfield Chapters 33 to 36 Quiz : David’s life moves between love, responsibility, and sudden hardship. His deep love for Dora Spenlow grows stronger every day. Through this contrast, the novel shows the difference between youthful idealism and conservative thinking.
Soon, David attends a picnic with Dora and becomes completely absorbed in her presence. He grows jealous when another man tries to gain Dora’s attention. His emotions rise and fall quickly, revealing his youthful and romantic nature. Later, encouraged by Julia Mills, David finally gathers courage to confess his love to Dora. Dora shyly accepts him, and the two secretly become engaged. David is overjoyed and even buys an engagement ring. However, their immaturity becomes clear when they quarrel soon afterwards, though the misunderstanding is later solved.
At the same time, the problems of other characters continue. Traddles tells David about Mr. Micawber’s endless financial troubles. Micawber has even changed his name and appearance to escape creditors. David and Peggotty kindly help Traddles recover his belongings from a greedy pawnbroker. But a far greater shock waits for David at home. Aunt Betsey suddenly arrives and announces that she has lost all her money. Despite her ruin, she remains brave and advises David not to fear misfortune but to face it courageously.
The following chapters focus on David’s growing maturity. Deeply troubled by his aunt’s loss, he becomes determined to support himself and help her. Miss Betsey expresses doubts about Dora, feeling that Dora is too childish to guide or strengthen David in difficult times. Yet she does not oppose the relationship.
David tries to recover part of the money paid for his legal training, but the law office refuses. He then meets Agnes Wickfield, who tells him that Uriah Heep now controls her father’s business and influences him badly. Agnes remains calm and supportive, especially when she suggests that David seek work from Dr. Strong.
David immediately accepts responsibility and obtains part-time employment from Dr. Strong. Wanting to improve himself further, he decides to learn shorthand reporting so that he may work in Parliament reporting debates. His hard work and determination show how much he has matured from the frightened child of earlier chapters.
Another touching development occurs with Mr. Dick. Feeling useless after Miss Betsey’s financial collapse, he happily begins earning money by copying legal documents. His simple joy reflects his loyal and loving nature.
