David Copperfield Chapters 37 to 40 Quiz

David Copperfield Chapters 37 to 40 Quiz : The story begins with Mrs. Crupp trying to frighten Aunt Betsey in the same manner she once troubled Peggotty. However, Aunt Betsey proves much stronger than her, and Mrs. Crupp quietly withdraws. David feels peaceful and protected under his auntโ€™s care. Yet his personal life is full of worry because he has still not told Dora that he is poor. When he finally gathers courage to speak honestly, Dora reacts like a frightened child. She cannot bear the thought of poverty or hard work. Instead of understanding Davidโ€™s struggle, she worries about whether her little dog Jip will continue to receive its daily food. David gently suggests that Dora should learn housekeeping and cooking, but she becomes upset and even faints. Miss Mills later explains that Dora is too delicate and childish for practical responsibilities.

Meanwhile, David works hard to improve himself. He learns shorthand so that he can become successful in his profession. Though the work is difficult, his love for Dora encourages him to continue. Traddles also helps him greatly. David tries to write speeches in Parliament but realizes that he still needs much more practice.

Soon another crisis arrives. Mr. Spenlow discovers Davidโ€™s secret letters to Dora after Miss Murdstone finds one of them. Mr. Spenlow becomes extremely angry and refuses to allow the relationship. He even threatens to separate Dora from David forever. David refuses to give up his love, but before anything further happens, Mr. Spenlow suddenly dies. After his death, it is discovered that his financial affairs were badly managed and Dora is left with very little money. She goes to live with her aunts, and David becomes lonely and depressed.

Aunt Betsey sends David to Dover to keep him occupied. Later he visits Agnes and Mr. Wickfield in Canterbury. Agnes once again becomes Davidโ€™s source of comfort and wisdom. David realizes that he can openly share his troubles with Agnes in a way he cannot with Dora. During this visit, Uriah Heepโ€™s real nature becomes clearer. Though he constantly pretends to be humble, he secretly desires power and control. He even hints at marrying Agnes. Mr. Wickfield, weak and unhappy, appears trapped under Uriahโ€™s influence.

The final part of these chapters becomes emotional and touching. David unexpectedly meets Mr. Peggotty, who is still searching for little Emโ€™ly after her fall from respectability. Mr. Peggottyโ€™s love and forgiveness show the greatness of his character. Though Emโ€™ly keeps sending letters and money, he only wishes to find and protect her. Dickens presents Mr. Peggotty as a symbol of pure human love and sacrifice.
